Everything you always wanted to know about waffles

Who doesn't love it? The smell of freshly baked waffles. There's nothing more delicious. Homemade waffles are something for young and old alike and are super quick and easy to prepare. And the best thing? They can be varied in many ways. Whether heart-shaped or Belgian, sweet or savory or something completely different like waffle fries. Everyone gets a taste for waffles. :-)

Where does the term Waffle?

The term waffle has been known in Germany since around the 17th century and spread through the Rhine regions. The waffle is a Lower Franconian festive and fasting pastry similar to doughnuts and strauben. Nowadays, waffles are often baked, sold and of course eaten at festivals and events.

Basic recipe for waffles

In just a few minutes and with just a few ingredients, your waffle batter is ready and you have fluffy waffles just like your grandma used to make. To prepare the waffle batter, use either a hand mixer or a food processor. Alternatively, you can also prepare the batter with a whisk.

  • 125 g butter or margarine
  • 3 eggs
  • 250 g flour
  • 200 ml milk
  • 100 ml sparkling water (attention: secret ingredient!)
  • 50 g sugar
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 sachet vanilla sugar
  • 1 pinch of salt

Mix the butter with the sugar and vanilla sugar. Then beat with the eggs until foamy. Mix the flour, baking powder and salt and stir into the batter. Then add the milk and mix slowly. Et voilà – you’re done! 🙂

Vegan waffles or waffles without egg

Do you live a vegan lifestyle or want to avoid animal products from time to time, but don’t want to miss out on the delicious taste of fresh waffles? No problem! You can easily replace some of your ingredients with alternatives.

You can replace the butter with vegetable margarine or neutral vegetable oil, for example. For the milk, you can simply use a milk alternative such as oat, soy or almond milk. You can leave out the eggs completely or replace them with soaked chia seeds.

Sweet waffles and savory waffles

Tastes are known to differ. This also applies to waffles! The great thing is that they can be made both sweet and savory.

Why should you leave the waffle batter to rest?

As flour, eggs and milk do not mix particularly well, the batter can swell during the resting time and the flour has enough time to bind all the ingredients together. This ensures a more stable and smooth waffle batter

How long do you have to bake waffles?

The baking time depends entirely on the waffle iron and the amount of batter. Ideally, place approx. 2 heaped tablespoons of waffle batter on the preheated waffle iron and bake for approx. 1-2 minutes until golden brown.

How do I store freshly baked waffles?

To keep your homemade waffles for even longer, you have various options for storing them:

  1. You can store them in a tin can. They will stay fresh there for a few days and you can go back to your delicious waffles at a later date.
  2. You freeze your waffle. If necessary, they can easily be defrosted again, e.g. using a toaster – this will make them even crispier 😉

How do you use a waffle iron?

It is important that the waffle iron is placed on a stable and heat-resistant surface. The iron can then be preheated and as soon as it has reached the right temperature, you will receive a signal (light, beep, etc.). Then pour the batter into the waffle iron, close it and let the waffles bake.

How many watts should a good waffle iron have?

The waffle iron should have at least 600 to 800 watts to achieve good results. Appliances that can bake several waffles at the same time require more power.
