Why do we even have a hangover?
A hangover is the result of a combination of factors related to alcohol consumption. Here are some of the main causes:
- Dehydration: Alcohol has a dehydrating effect, i.e. it stimulates the body to excrete more fluid. This leads to dehydration, which in turn can cause headaches, tiredness and dizziness.
- Sleep disorders: Alcohol interferes with the normal sleep cycle. Although it initially makes you tired, it interferes with deep and restful sleep, which can lead to tiredness and irritability the next day.
- Inflammation: Alcohol can lead to an increased inflammatory response in the body, which can contribute to joint pain and general discomfort.
- Loss of important nutrients: Alcohol impairs the absorption of important nutrients in the body, especially B vitamins. A lack of these vitamins can lead to tiredness and weakness.
It is important to note that the intensity of a hangover can vary from person to person, depending on factors such as individual tolerance, the amount of alcohol consumed and other individual health factors. To avoid or minimize a hangover, it is advisable to use alcohol responsibly, drink plenty of water and eat a balanced diet.
Now that we’ve taken a look at the science behind the infamous hangover, it’s time to banish it. And how? With delicious recipes.
