Boost your (immune) system – Mapi Obst X SEVERIN

We all know that fruit and vegetables are important for our health - but not everyone knows why we should also make sure to buy seasonal and regional products. So here are 7 reasons why it is important to pay attention not only to the vitamins, but also to the place of origin.
Get the taste

Seasonal and local food usually tastes better, but why is that? The fact that both the ripening location and the ripening period create optimal conditions means that the flavor can develop perfectly and be harvested at the right time. Unfortunately, it is common for imported produce to be harvested too early and not fully ripened.

Vitamin Booster

The longer vegetables and fruit ripen, the higher their nutrient content. This means that foods that reach their optimum ripening time contain more vitamins than those that are harvested too early. Fruit and vegetables that are harvested before they are ripe are also harder for the body to digest.

Good for you and the environment

Imported fruit and vegetables are transported to Germany over long distances – by ship, plane or truck. Unfortunately, this releases a lot of greenhouse gases and increases CO2 emissions and waste production. Food that is grown by the farmer next door and sold a little further away saves all this and has a positive impact on the environment.

Also good for your wallet

Not only great quality and taste – seasonal and regional fruit and vegetables are also good for your wallet. There are no long transportation routes and the food stays fresh for much longer than produce that has already been transported at great cost.

When is which fruit/vegetable in season?

Every vegetable or fruit is in season at a different time. Here you can see a small selection of regional varieties and when they are in season.

The largest selection of vegetables is available between June and October, but some varieties are also in season in winter, such as kale. This is available from November to February.

When it comes to fruit, rhubarb starts in April and is followed by strawberries, cherries and many other berries. Plums, for example, are available for the longest. These are in season until October.

However, a few varieties can also be stored well, such as apples or potatoes, so that you can still buy regional food in the colder months.
