FAQ: All questions about eBBQ and the SEVO!

In a world where technology and tradition are increasingly merging, many barbecue fans are asking themselves the question: Can an electric barbecue really keep up with the traditional charcoal or gas barbecue? And what exactly makes the SEVO electric barbecue so special? In this article, we get to the bottom of these questions and take a closer look at the advantages and disadvantages of the eBBQ, especially the SEVO. Let's then dive in together and find out why the SEVO electric barbecue is more than just a kitchen appliance.

Commissioning

Before you start barbecuing, it is important to get the barbecue up and running properly. Starting up the SEVO is very simple: plug it in, switch it on and the barbecuing fun can begin!

But perhaps you still have questions about using the SEVO for the first time or would like to find out more about its functions? No problem! Let us answer your questions and make sure you’re fully prepared to get the most out of your eBBQ experience.

Where is the best place to set up my SEVO?

Place the barbecue on a level, heat-resistant and splash-proof surface, as splashes are unavoidable with greasy food. Do not place the grill directly against a wall or corner and remove easily flammable objects from the vicinity.

Does the SEVO get hot from the outside or underneath? / Can I touch the SEVO from the outside while it is grilling?

The SEVO has a Safe Touch surface. This means that the outside of the grill housing can also be touched during the grilling process. Caution: Even if there is no risk of burns, the appliance can still get hot.

Can I use my SEVO in my home or indoors?

In principle, the SEVO can also be used indoors. As splashes are unavoidable with greasy food, make sure that the grill is placed on a level, heat-resistant and splash-proof surface and that it is sufficiently far away from walls or corners and easily flammable objects. As dripping fat can cause smoke, we recommend that the SEVO is only set up indoors under an extractor fan or in a well-ventilated area, as otherwise it may cause unpleasant odors.

The SEVO has 3,000 watts – is this suitable for a normal socket or do I need a power connection?

Yes, a normal socket is sufficient. However, as the SEVO requires 3,000 watts, only one grill can be used per circuit.

Why do I need to fill the SEVO with water? / Why does the SEVO need a water tray?

Water must be poured into the reflector bowl before each start-up! This cools the reflector bowl, reduces the amount of smoke produced by dripping fat and minimizes the risk of fatty food catching fire. It also makes cleaning easier. Only insert the mains plug after filling with water. Do not pour water directly onto the heating element.

Can I operate my SEVO without water in the water tray?

No, the SEVO must not be operated without water. Greasy food can ignite, so water must be poured into the reflector bowl before each use. Only then plug in the mains plug. This cools the reflector bowl, reduces smoke development and makes cleaning easier.

Do I need to add water when barbecuing?

Yes, before the water has evaporated from the tray, new water must be added. This is necessary after approx. 5 hours when the water tray is filled to the maximum and the maximum grill temperature is 500 °C. With the lid closed (320 °C) after approx. 20 hours. The water level must be checked regularly. To refill, switch off the appliance and disconnect the mains plug. Do not pour water directly onto the heating element!

How much water do I need to fill the SEVO water tray with?

Align the grill straight. Pour water into the reflector bowl up to the “Max” mark (maximum 2 liters). The water must not be poured directly onto the heating element or the sensor on the heating element.

Can I operate my SEVO with an extension cable?

Yes, but if a cable reel or extension cable is used, this may result in a loss of power. It is important to ensure that a high-quality cable approved for outdoor use is used. The cable must be completely unwound from the reel, otherwise undesirable heating and damage to the cable may occur. The performance of the SEVO can also be impaired by an inferior extension cable / cable reel or improper use.

How do I put my SEVO into operation?

Set up the SEVO in a suitable location and align it straight.
Insert the mains plug into an earthed socket.
The illuminated ring lights up blue. The appliance is ready for operation
Pour water into the reflector bowl up to the “Max” mark (maximum 2 l). The water must not be poured directly onto the heating element or the sensor on the heating element.

SEVO details & operation

Which SEVO models are available?

The SEVO is available as a standard and Smart Control version. The Smart Control version has a third heating coil for indirect grilling and connectivity with the mySEVERIN app for smart grilling with app control. Both versions are available as SEVO GT (with lid, without barbecue trolley) and SEVO GTS (with lid, with barbecue trolley).

How many degrees does the SEVO reach?

The SEVO reaches up to 750 °C – measured at the heater. We think it’s more honest to tell you how high the temperature is measured on the meat, so we quote the 500 °C reached on the food. This is also the relevant temperature that should be kept in mind when grilling and is therefore displayed.

The SEVO reaches 500 °C on the boost zone, on the right half of the grill with the lid open. It reaches a maximum of 350 °C over the entire grilling surface with the lid open or closed.

Does the SEVO get hotter than gas and charcoal barbecues?

The SEVO reaches up to 750 °C on the heater when the BoostZone is activated, 500 °C of which is directly on the food. Commercially available gas barbecues reach up to 300 °C, high-priced gas barbecues with a separate infrared side burner up to 800 °C. In a charcoal barbecue, the charcoal burns at approx. 800 °C, of which – depending on the height of the grill – approx. 450 – 500 °C reaches the food. This heat decreases as the charcoal burns down.

Steaks in particular need heat to create a good crust (“branding”), while the meat in the middle remains juicy and tender. 500 °C on the food is very suitable for this.

What do the zones and grilling modes on the SEVO mean?

Normal grilling: 80 – 350 °C on the entire grilling surface
For grilling sausages, poultry, fish, etc. For post-cooking steaks.

Boost zone grilling: 330 – 500 °C on the right half of the grilling surface with the lid open, the left side is heated to 330 °C.
For grilling steaks and creating a crispy crust.

Indirect grilling, grill mode “”Indirect””: 80 – 200 °C Only the outer area of the grilling surface is heated. This creates an indirect zone. For cooking spare ribs, pulled pork or roasts, for example. Particularly suitable for long jobs.

How do I set a grilling temperature or grilling mode on the SEVO?

Select the grilling mode by turning the control dial and pressing briefly to confirm.
Grill mode “Indirect” 80 – 200°C
Grill mode “Normal” 80 – 350°C
Grill mode “Boost Zone” 330 – 500°C (only with the lid open)

Set the desired temperature by turning the control dial again. Confirm by pressing briefly.
The light ring flashes = the appliance is heating up.
The light ring lights up = temperature has been reached
The grill mode can also be set on the smartphone via the mySeverin app.

What is the BoostZone & how do I start Boost mode?

The BoostZone, also known as the sizzle zone in barbecue jargon, is located on the right-hand side of the grilling surface. There is a double heating coil there. To use the boost zone, open the lid of the grill, select and confirm the “Boost” grilling mode directly on the appliance using the control dial or in the mySeverin app. Confirm the desired temperature of 500 °C by selecting it again. The ring flashes red and the appliance heats up. As soon as the selected temperature is reached, the ring lights up red continuously.

What is indirect grilling?

With indirect grilling, the food is not above the heat source, but next to it. A grill with a lid is required for this grilling technique. The closed system circulates the air in the cooking space and creates an oven effect. This gentle cooking method with relatively low temperatures increases the cooking time. Classic indirect grilling dishes are the so-called longjobs: roasts, pulled pork, spare ribs and beef brisket. Detailed instructions for these dishes can be found in the mySeverin app under ‘Recipes’.

Is indirect grilling possible on my SEVO?

Your SEVO Smart Control has a grilling mode for indirect grilling. To do this, set the “indirect” grilling mode directly on the appliance or in the mySeverin app. The light ring on the appliance then lights up purple.

What do the different colors in which my SEVO lights up mean?

The light ring indicates the operating status of the appliance.
Orange: Grilling 80 – 350 °C
Red: Boost zone 330 – 500 °C
Purple: Indirect 80 – 200 °C
Blue: Stand-by mode
Not lit: Sleep mode.
Flashing: The appliance is heating up or cooling down.
Steady light: The selected temperature has been reached.

What does it mean when the light ring on my SEVO flashes?

Flashing: The appliance is heating up or cooling down.
Steady light: The selected temperature has been reached.

How large is the grilling surface of the SEVO?

The grilling surface of the SEVO appliances is approx. 41.5 cm x 31.5 cm (=1,300 cm²).

Why do I need the lid on the SEVO?

The lid ensures better heat storage and protects against wind. Only with the lid can the SEVO be used to prepare slow grilled dishes, pizza or smoked food.

Can I connect any commercially available core thermometer to the SEVO?

The grill may only be used with the core thermometer supplied or with the SEVERIN SEVO core thermometer Art. No. ZB 8126 may be used.

How do I use the core thermometer?

Insert the plug of the core thermometer into the power box on the grill. Insert the spike of the thermometer into the thickest part of the food, as close to the center as possible. If the food to be grilled contains a bone, the temperature probe at the tip of the thermometer should not touch it, otherwise the temperature may be distorted. The target temperature of the core thermometer can then be set directly on the grill or in the mySeverin app and the current core temperature can be monitored.

How do I set a timer on my SEVO?

The grilling time can be monitored using the timer. The running time can be set from 1 min to 23 h 59 min. When the time has elapsed, you will hear a beep and the heating element remains switched on.

Turn the control dial until it lights up.

Press the control dial briefly and turn it to set the hours.
