SEVERIN presents its first sustainability report – for transparency and more responsibility towards future generations
SEVERIN, the Sauerland-based company with over 130 years of history, is one of the first medium-sized companies to present its sustainability report and targets for the coming years. SEVERIN shows how sustainability and innovation go hand in hand.
Since its foundation in 1892, SEVERIN has repeatedly set new standards and has already achieved several milestones in the field of sustainability, such as the:
- Establishment of a separate testing department for product quality and safety (1961)
- Opening of new assembly halls and our own finished and spare parts warehouse (1985)
- Introduction of the SEVERIN Caprice, one of the first repairable filter coffee machines (1992)
- Nomination for the German Sustainability Award 2025 (June 2024)
- Presentation of SEVERIN’s first sustainability report (September 2024)
“The effects of the climate crisis are becoming ever clearer. It’s time for companies like ours to take responsibility and actively contribute to shaping a sustainable future,” says Gerhard Sturm, CEO of SEVERIN. “Our first sustainability report is a commitment to transparency and obligation towards future generations. At the same time, we want to emphasise our claim to a leading role for sustainability in the household electronics sector among German SMEs. We are aware that the path to a sustainable future requires continuous efforts and are therefore striving to further optimise our performance. Our nomination for the German Sustainability Award 2025 in June of this year shows that we are on the right track.”
Pioneer in the repair of home appliances
Back in 1992, SEVERIN launched CAPRICE, one of the first repairable filter coffee machines, and established a repair centre that has been in operation for over 30 years. Last year alone, products worth over 2.5 million euros were repaired there – a clear sign of SEVERIN’s commitment to resource conservation and durability.
In 2023, SEVERIN conducted a comprehensive analysis of its business activities, held in-depth discussions with stakeholders and reviewed the relevance of the 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) From these goals, the five most relevant ones were selected to guide SEVERIN’s business activities: gender equality, affordable and clean energy, decent work and economic growth, sustainable consumption and production and climate protection.
Based on these findings, SEVERIN has defined six strategic fields of action that integrate sustainability even more deeply into the company’s processes: Climate, circular economy and packaging, supply chain, employees, governance, consumer and product safety.
SEVERIN has set itself clear sustainability goals in these areas that are intended to anchor ecological responsibility and social justice in its business processes. An important aspect here is the use of common parts, which, for example, reduce the number of spare parts and therefore facilitate repairs, minimising waste and extending the service life of the products in the process. The recycling rate of incoming returns shall be increased, as shall the use of recycled materials in product packaging. A key objective is to reduce direct and indirect CO² emissions, for which a detailed action plan has been drawn up and shall be implemented by 2030.
“For SEVERIN, sustainability is not just a buzzword, it is deeply rooted in our corporate culture. Last year, we made significant progress in the areas of environment, social affairs and corporate governance, which is now documented for the first time in this report. Our commitment to sustainability is not only reflected in our environmentally responsible behaviour, but also in the promotion of a fair and inclusive working environment, in our cooperation with our partners and in consideration of the responsibility we bear for society.” Luca Kunze, Sustainability Expert.
The 60-page sustainability report relates to the financial years 2022 and 2023 and complies with the GRI Standards in accordance with the GRI Update 2021, which came into force on 1 January 2023. It can be viewed at the following web address: www.severin.com/sustainability
