Ingredients
Ingredients for 2 portions
Phillie Cheese Steak Sandwich
  • 225 g flank steak
  • 6 slices of cheddar cheese
  • 1 baguette (not wholemeal)
  • 2 onions
  • 2 peppers
  • Salt
  • Pepper
  • Oil

Preparation

  1. Freeze the meat on a chopping board for approx. 20 mins.
  2. Peel the onions, deseed the peppers and cut both into thin strips. Cut the meat into strips as thinly as possible.
  3. Heat a cast-iron pan over a medium heat and add a splash of oil. Add the onions and peppers, season with salt and pepper and sauté for approx. 5 mins. until soft. Remove from the pan and set aside.
  4. Season the meat with salt and pepper and grill. Use two wooden spatulas to “beat” the meat on the grill. This helps to tenderize the meat.
  5. Divide the grilled meat into two rows and divide the onions and peppers evenly between the rows. Top with cheese, turn the heat down and allow to melt.
  6. Cut the baguette into two equal sandwiches and cut in half lengthways. Do not cut the bread all the way through, but leave one long side open. Place the baguette with the cut side on the grill at a medium to high heat (230°C). Only warm the bread, do not toast it. Place on a plate and top with the meat, onions, peppers and cheese.
